Slavic Ceramics from 10th -12th century AD

Last week, I met with Dr. Norbert Goßler and Thomas Kinkeldey from the Brandenburgisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologisches Landesmuseum in Wünsdorf near Berlin. They are working on a wonderful project concerning the Slavic Middle Ages (10th - 12th century) in Germany. The work concerns the excavation of both so called "Burgs" as well as other settlement for the Middle Elbe area around Lenzen (Kr. Prignitz, Land Brandenburg) and is financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG-Projekt "Linonen Westprignitz". More info can be found on their website www.elbslawen.de.

Residues on several pieces of ceramic were sampled and will be subjected to DTMS analysis in order to determine the nature of the vessel contents. One of the residues comes from a vessel of a type commonly considered to be used for the preparation of pitch. Pitch was well known and commonly used in Slavic times in Germany.
